Kilimanjaro Trekking Routes

About Kilimanjaro National Park

Mount Kilimanjaro is one of the most popular trekking destinations in the world. Climbing the mountain is a significant achievement, but it doesn’t require technical mountaineering skills, making it accessible to trekkers with a good level of fitness. Several routes lead to the summit, each offering a different experience of the mountain’s ecosystems, difficulty, and scenery.

Key Routes for Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro:

  • Machame Route (Whiskey Route):
The most popular and scenic route, with stunning views, diverse landscapes, and a relatively high success rate. It typically takes 6-7 days to complete and involves significant elevation gain each day.

  • Marangu Route (Coca-Cola Route):
The only route with hut accommodations (as opposed to tents), making it the most comfortable option for climbers. It is a 5-6 day trek, considered easier in terms of terrain, but the ascent is quicker, which may affect the acclimatization process.

  • Lemosho Route:
This is considered one of the most scenic and remote routes, which also offers a high summit success rate. It typically takes 7-8 days, and it allows for better acclimatization.

  • Rongai Route:
Starting from the northern side of the mountain, this route is less crowded and offers a more gradual ascent. It typically takes 6-7 days.

  • Umbwe Route:
Known as one of the most challenging routes, the Umbwe Route is steeper and offers a more difficult climb. It’s best suited for experienced climbers and takes around 6 days.

  • Northern Circuit Route:
The newest and longest route (typically 9 days), offering great scenery and acclimatization opportunities, with less crowding and a high summit success rate.

Climbing Seasons:

  • Best Time to Climb:
The best months to attempt to summit Mount Kilimanjaro are during the dry seasons—from late June to October and January to March. These months provide clear skies, less rainfall, and stable conditions. However, climbers can technically attempt the climb year-round.

  • Weather:
The climate on Kilimanjaro varies dramatically depending on elevation. The lower altitudes (rainforests) can be warm and humid, while the summit area is cold, often with snow or ice. Climbers should be prepared for a range of temperatures and weather conditions.
